Boot open warning when boot is closed

Hi All. My son is having problems with his 2009 Fiesta. When driving along the 'Boot open' warning comes up. So far it's been resolved when he opens and closes the hatch. However, he noticed the interior lights and footwell lights were on half an hour after he locked the car recently. A problem waiting to happen if he leaves his car and doesn't notice.
Has anyone else had the same problem and managed to resolve it. Answers / suggestions would be most welcome.
